Wooden Nesting Dolls

Traditional nesting dolls (stacking dolls) from Russia, called "Matryoshka" dolls, are sets of dolls where one doll neatly hides, or nests, inside of the next larger doll. The nesting sequence continues until only the tallest, outermost doll of the set remains visible.

The dolls are hand-carved in basswood (wood from linden trees), hand-painted, and finished with several layers of high-gloss lacquer. The artist then signs the bottom of the tallest doll. They make wonderful gifts that everyone enjoys.

The Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow and the Kirov (Mariinsky) Ballet Company of St. Petersburg are just two examples of Russia's legendary classical ballet.
